Instant Family (Movie Review)

Oscar Rendon | November 20th, 2018

Instant Family stars Mark Wahlberg (Lone Survivor), Rose Byrne (Brides Maids), Isabela Moner (Transformers: The Last Knight) and Octavia Spencer (The Help).

Instant Family is the feel good family movie of the season. Starring Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne as a middle aged couple who decide to adopt three siblings. Mark and Rose have great chemistry as they try to navigate parenthood when they adopt a teenager and her two younger siblings. The dialogue they have when they’re struggling to connect with the children is funny, heartwarming and seems realistic as the writing feels really well thought out and executed by the actors. While the film stars two mega hitters like Rose Byrne and Mark Wahlberg, the breakout star is Isabela Moner who plays the oldest sibling Lizzy. Her character and performance is the glue to the whole film which is what brings some of the emotional beats to the film, along with the younger actors playing her brother and sister. The comedy works because it’s never too forced and each character is anchored emotionally to each other which allows for the funny moments to be that much funnier and the slower more sadder moments that much emotional. Some great supporting actors also come to play as Octavia Spencer, Tig Notaro and Tom Segura joined the cast as some extra added humor cushions and were utilized sparingly and when it served the story.

Overall, the film is a great story of family, family not being by blood but by the bond we create with one another. Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne deliver a great performance as new parents struggling to care for three kids. The story was good, and writing alright but was elevated by the chemistry of the cast. The movie delivered on the drama when it needed to for story progression. The comedy in the film was also used to great effect allowing us to see the character development and defined each character differently. We would recommend you see Instant Family in theaters this week or any other day for the holidays.
