Deadpool 2 (Movie Review)
Deadpool 2 is out in theaters and is the sequel to the highly successful solo outing of the "Merc with the Mouth". Directed by David Leitch, written by Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, & Paul Wernick. The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Morena Baccarin, Zazie Beetz, TJ Miller, and Julian Dennison. Deadpool returns with a team known as 'X-Force' to protect a young mutant being hunted by a mutant traveler from the future, Cable.
Deadpool 2 brings all the fun action and comedy that it's predecessor did when Deadpool hit theaters in February of 2016. Much of the films plot is held from the actual trailers as the film unfolds a whole new story between Mr. Pool and the mutant known as Cable. This film is presented with more heart and grounded stakes much like the original. We really get a sense of small growth from the character even if it is very minimal. Audiences will love the character they fell in love with with more characters coming back like Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Blind Al, Weasel, Vanessa and Dopinder. New characters that fans will love and that are introduced quite well in this film include Russel Collins aka 'Fire Fist', Yukio, Domino, and Nathan Summers aka 'Cable'.
Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is the role that Reynolds was born to play, his comedic timing and quick quips are what make the character work and also gives his presentation a more realistic tone. The character is presented as a self-centered person with no feelings or care for anyone besides Vanessa. Throughout the film though he does show some emotional growth, he takes an interest in caring for a young mutant, Russel who is then hunted by Cable. Cable, played by Josh Brolin is less subtle but it works as he is well aware that he isn't the joking type. Brolin played one Marvel character this year already but this is the first time we see all of Brolin's ability to play a character like Cable who is stoic and quiet but also mean and ready to get the job done. Cable does have some quieter moments in the film, short but impactful enough to let the audience know why he is doing what he is doing without having to tell the audience. Why the relationship between Deadpool amd Cable works is because of newcomer Julian Dennison's portrayal of Russel. Russel is a misguided and mistreated kid who is looking to anyone to protect him and care for him. The most real actions of a character come from Russel who feels tossed aside and abandoned. He has one great scene at the end that really pulls in all the emotion and heart this film has which some think is crazy to say when dealing with a film about Deadpool. Some great standouts in the film include Dopinder as usual who was used sparingly in the film and Domino played by Zazie Beetz who was as funny if not funnier than Deadpool and was a character that was easy and fun to root for.
Overall, the film has a lot of what fans wanted from the first Deadpool which is fun action, great comedy, witty banter between characters but they are also treated with heart, emotion and like Deadpool says "this is a family movie". A lot of the 4th wall breaking works and has us laughing, and there are a few surprises fans will love that we cannot spoil for you.
