Avengers: Endgame (Movie Review)

Avengers: Endgame stars.. everyone under the sun. Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Paul Rudd, Karen Gillan, Brie Larson, Danai Gurira, Don Cheadle, Tessa Thompson and Josh Brolin. After the events of Avengers: Infinity War where do our heroes stand as the world they knew is turned to dust. Do they move on or in namesake “Avenge The Fallen”.

The most daring film in history in cinema was created in Avengers: Endgame. Twenty-One films leading up to Endgame have set the stage for one of Marvel’s biggest films ever. While we won’t spoil any or much of the film please caution that we will talk bits and pieces from each character in the film. SPOILERS AHEAD (NO PLOT TALK, KEEPING IT VAGUE).

Let’s catch up shall we? Thanos snapped, Tony and Nebula are left on Titan and Cap & Co. are defeated and lose half their friends. We wept, Peter cried, and.. oh yeah, Scott got stuck in the Quantum Realm.. again. Ok, all caught up? Good! So, we pick up Endgame right where Infinity War left off, our heroes are shocked at the loss they suffered by Thanos and as their namesake says, time to Avenge stuff and people lost from the snap. The biggest takeaways from the film was one the writing, every character felt and acted the way they should have when losing all your friends to a ‘Mad Titan’ (Thanos). To my surprise the first half of the film is dialogue heavy and really relies on the emotions the characters are feeling and going through as they process everything that has happened. While the comedy is there, it is used sparingly. The look of the film is also distinct as it is darker in color and in tone. Balancing comedy in a darker movie is tough but Joe & Anthony Russo have done it again.

Let’s talk about characters. The characters that go through the most in this film are Cap, Tony, Hawkeye, Nebula and Ant-Man (Scott Lang). Steve Rogers aka Captain America played by Chris Evans turns in his most emotional and darkest performance as Cap struggles to move on, Tony Stark also goes trough somewhat of a transformation but going too in-depth would mean spoiling the fun for you. What we can say is that he.. is Iron Man. Hawkeye, well you can sort of tell from the trailers that he loses his family due to the snap. His arc in the film along with another character is satisfying and he finally gets his due as an OG Avenger. Ant-Man becomes the catalyst for the plot so we can’t tell you much only what you know. He gets out of the Quantum Realm. Nebula has her moments with a lot of our favorite Avengers but she is also a character that revealing the tiniest bit can spoil a bit so maybe we’ll just say that she too has a character arc in the film.. a big one. (That is not a spoiler)

We promise to have a SPOILER filled review up as well in due time.

Obviously, the film has a ton of surprises. With the idea of time travel or.. quantum realm traveling you can expect some unexpected characters to return for Avengers: Endgame. The film as a 3-hour marathon never feels that long and goes by so fast that you are left wanting more but it also feels like a satisfying conclusion to the Infinity saga that started 11 years ago with Iron Man (2008). So, what can you expect? The unexpected. Expect laughs, tears.. of joy and an overwhelming feeling of closure and yet a feeling of knowing we’ll see these characters again some day. It’s only a 3-hour film, so plan your Endgame Pre-Game accordingly. Avengers: Endgame is our Return of the Jedi, just much cooler and instead of Ewoks we get Rocket so yeah.
