NBC’s hit show This Is Us, created by Dan Fogelman has always done a great job at talking about taboo subjects that quite haven’t made it into mainstream television. On Tuesdays episode ‘Toby’, the show decided to tackle the topic of interracial relationships with Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Zoe’s (Melanie Liburd) growing story and with a flashback of teen Randall (Niles Fitch). In the episode they talk about the subtlety of how certain people dismiss relationships between two people of different races and then one very blunt when young Randall was confronted with his white girlfriends father.

Also, the show dived deeper into Toby’s backstory as he suffers through depression. Depression when it involved men has always been a touchy subject as most men feel criticized or embarrassed when they talk about their depression. We expect the show will continue to explore the storyline further in the coming episodes that follow. Watch This Is Us Tuesdays on NBC.
